Samsung PN42A450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV Review

I originally purchased this TV as a gift for my parents’ however they thought it was too much (not in price wise though). So I ended up giving them my new 32″ LCD that was in my bedroom … however the gift was just for a spare room in their home that didn’t have a TV (which I wanted 1 to be in there).

Anyhow, I purchased this TV in DEC08 — nearly 5 months & it’s already discontinued, although I don’t know how long it actually survived on the market. Overall, it works pretty well up to my standards even though I don’t spend too much time watching it. Nonetheless, I’ve occasionally noticed that it seems to be subject of a slight burn-in. I really don’t know … But I’m starting to feel as if this TV won’t last me too long because sometimes I see an image very faintly when I turn it off or switch onto vid-mode. Like the previous channel’s logo will still be there for a moment.

The design/look is nonetheless, stylish! Which is a plus but I’m not too sure about the actual quality of it just yet. So far I will give it 4 out of 5 (although I would say a 3.5 is more suitable).

Boomy sound – KWeber – Lake Success, NY United States
I guess when you have a trend towards ever slimmer flat-screen TVs, we simply will not get decent audio. After all, speakers need a certain physcial depth to achieve any sort of bass.
However, what Samsung has done with this TV, and other firms do it as well, is to place the speakers on the back, and they are rear-firing speakers. The result, especially in cases where the TV is in a large room, is an unpleasant boomy-ness. Dialog especially is garbled. Yes, I played around with all the audio settings, and that helps somewhat, but in the end I had to attach a low cost home theater system, and that helped improve the sound considerably.

Very happy with the purchase. Met a nice salesperson at the Samsung store in the Time Warner Center. She took me through a number of different websites and assisted me in finding a model that worked for my plan. Shipped to my home and although a small delay, the television arrived following a major snow storm in good shape. The store called and said that the model I ordered was out of stock and offered me a free upgrade which I accepted. Very happy with all aspects of the transaction. Excellent service!

not happy with the product quality – J. Phillip –
After a year of use, when switching the TV on or off, the blank screen shows some red color bleeding before any picture appears near the left of the screen. Tried resetting to factory settings, and also using the scrolling feature that is supposed to fix burn-in issues but there has been no change. Samsung support said I’ll need to get an onsite technician to diagnose and fix this which will probably cost a third of what I bought this for.

That said, the TV is sleek, and easy to use. Sound quality could be better.

I searched and searched looking for the right flat screen. I was very new to this technology as well. I visited several websites and stores. There are true benefits of both LCD and Plasma; however, the plasma has an awesome view with brighter pictures and excellent for movie nights. Some people say the plasma tv will cause an increase in the electric bill because it does use more energy. I have not noticed much of an increase and I’ve had this tv for two months now. We watch it everyday. The 720p is great as well because most tv networks broadcast in 720p (The higher, the more expensive for the networks). I am very pleased with this Samsung. It has great sound and picture quality, and you can even connect your laptop computer to the tv. It definitely is a great purchase for the first flat screen tv buyer.

Samsung PN42C450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV (Black) Review

Okay for a 0 42 plasma its not fair to expect the world but I would most important is picture quality and it does great. I remember seeing other reviews that also said its comparable to other 1080p tvs and I would usually laugh at them for not being able to discern the difference. Now that I have experienced it firsthand I can say the same thing.
Few bits to note. Only three picture modes standard dynamic and movie. Never a fan of internal speakers and having trouble using antenna as source and external audio source via analag output (l/r RCA’s) It appears that it may only be for a component video source that allow that. Built in tuner has grabbed all the locals but one hd (fox). I like the favorites list button. You can toggle through all the channels on your list with one button. Sounds like channel up down button but easy way to create shorter list.

Havent gone through the setup menu to review burn in features pixel shift scrolling etc. but read about some unique features that year old k Panny plasma doesnt have. Auto Protection can have a screen saver kick in after 20 min 30 min of same image on screen.It also has an Eco-sensor to adjust brightness based on surroundings.
So only true gripe is hdmi source does not allow analog audio. Also wished it had analog audio out to send to stereo receiver.

I agree with most post this TV is a great deal for the money the only down fall is the stand and the screws!!!! Was the biggest pain to put together and like they said some are still not in all the way. I will be looking for a wall mount i think for this. Also does the remote not light up my other samsung remote has a button which lights up the channel and volume button etc, but could not find it on this one. Overall great TV very pleased!!!

I purchased this set 2 weeks ago and really happy with the TV and price.
The picture looked astonishing when i watched Star-Trek on blu ray last night. The set has got decent audio for a Television.
Only reason iam giving it a 4 rating is because of the screws!! Like one reviewer pointed out… the screws that come with the set do not seem to be the right size. They just seem one size bigger and though i got them in alright…my screwdriver (and probably the screws) is almost ruined. Iam pretty sure i would need to get newer screws if i need to re-assemble the set.

Samsung PN42A400 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV Review

I had a total budget of ,000. I wanted to get the most for my money. It’s easy to get the best TV (when money is no object) but very difficult to find the best value. At the end of the day, I selected this Samsung TV…with money left over to buy a blu-ray player.

The bottom line is that this is a great TV for the price. The fact is, on screen sizes smaller that 50″, 1080p is not a big deal. And although this is a plasma and not an LCD, plasmas have some advantages versus LCD TV’s (the blacks are “blacker”, for instance). Finally, you can get a 40-42″ 1080p LCD TV for less than 00 but it’s basically junk (at least as of today…but I’m sure that’ll change in time). This is a solid product from a solid manufacturer so you cannot go wrong…and I’ll be enjoying it for years to come.

Football is a whole new experience in HD. This TV is basically idiot proof…it looks good out of the box. Now the blu-ray technology is a bit of a different story.

In all fairness, the other TV to check in this price range–which is a great TV also–is the Panasonic TH-42PX80U. Which ever one you choose, enjoy!

I bought this plasma after about 6 months of rewviews, research, and shopping. 9.99. Dont be fooled by 1080p. Your eye can’t tell the difference unless you are within 5.5ft. Plasma Tv’s have a faster refresh rate than LCD(even the 120hz LCD’s), 100,000hr life, no burn issue anymore, and most have a better contrast.This TV is really awsome I compared it to the Samsung TOC(touch of color) series. The picture from a blu-ray player were virtually identical! This TV has many many settings that you can really tweak the color, contrast, etc. although you probably wont need them since it looks great out of the box. Sound is great as well, some reviews say different, but really is sounds great. Save you money dont believe the hype and bull about 1080p 120Hz LCD. You CAN get the same beautiful picture at a fraction of the cost.

Samsung PN42B450 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV Review

We have never had a large screen TV and were using a RCA 24′ from 1987. My wife and son went to Costco in search of a 32″ LCD to greatly enhance our movie watching experience. We’re not big on HD cable so that wasn’t a consideration. Once in the Costco store they perused the TV section and after finding the 32″ we were after they set out to do the shopping and would come back at the end to pick it up. Once they had the cart full, they returned about 40 minutes later to get the LCD. My son wandered down the isle to the front of our 42″ Samsung. They had just put the clearance sticker on and as it was a floor model the price was 0.00, a mere 20 dollars more than the 32″ LCD. Needless to say a no-brainer. I never realized watching a movie at home could be so engaging as watching it through our PS3 blueray. I would recommend this set to any one, and the difference between the 720 and 1080 is a sales ploy. I don’t doubt there are differences if your watching a 60inch screen. This is an amazing TV, and for the price it was one of the best purchases we have ever made, hands down!

I paid less than a thousand for it and like many other people say, it exceeded my expectations! My local cable company has like ten HD Channels and I tell you, they look amazing in this plasma, I don’t have many words to describe the beautiful picture you get from an HD source like cable or better yet; Bluray player. I gave it five stars because thats the maximum I can give, but I would have given a hundred if I could.

I just got this 42″ Samsung Plasma TV (Model: PN42B450) about a month ago from Best Buy, and I have a Sony DVD player that has HDMI out hooked up to it and ICE-AGE 3 (widescreen) looks awesome! on it, and that’s with the Picture settings on the TV set at: Mode Standard, Cell Light 4, Contrast 80, Brightness 43, Sharpness 50, Color 50, Tint G50/R50, and in Advanced Settings I have the Black Tone, Dynamic Contrast, and Edge Enhancement turned off.

Also, the color and black levels on this Plasma TV look very good!
